Mission Claims Victory in Five Set Match Against Haskell

Box Score Hilly Beck Court at W.E. Dowell Fieldhouse, Springfield, Mo. — September 18, 2025
Pre Game

Mission entered the contest 3–10 on the season, coming off a tough loss to Stephens College. Haskell arrived at 6–10 after dropping its most recent outing to Bethany College. Earlier this season, Haskell swept Mission in straight sets, giving the Lady Patriots extra motivation to flip the script on their home floor in Springfield.

Set 1 — Mission Starts Strong (25–20 Mission)
The opening set belonged to Mission after a back-and-forth start. Haskell jumped out quickly with a 6–1 run, but the Lady Patriots answered with six straight points of their own to seize a 7–6 lead.
Shelby Evans was the difference-maker, hammering down several key kills, including one set up by a sharp dig from Karsyn Ryan to give Mission a 12–11 edge. The teams traded points until 15–15, when Mission surged ahead with a 4–1 run, forcing a Haskell timeout. With momentum on their side, Hannah Maxwell connected with Evans for the decisive kill to seal the opener, 25–20.

Set 2 — Haskell Responds (25–21 Haskell)
Haskell regrouped in the second set, striking first with back-to-back points and building an early lead. Mission fought to stay close, highlighted by a block from Allie Czachowski and a powerful kill by Abbi Street. Still, the Lady Patriots trailed 15–7 before a Maxwell ace helped cut into the deficit. Late in the set, Mission stormed back from 15–21 to 19–22, forcing Haskell into a timeout. Despite the rally, Haskell steadied itself and closed the set, 25–21, evening the match at one apiece.

Set 3 — Patriots Regain Control (25–22 Mission)
Mission struck first again in set three and built momentum with strong net play. An early block from Violet Kirkpatrick and Evans gave the Lady Patriots a 9–5 advantage, while a service ace from Maxwell extended the margin to 13–7. Haskell refused to go quietly, closing the gap to 16–13, but Mission stayed composed, eventually stretching the lead to 20–15 after a Haskell timeout. The Indians fought back late, but Mission held on 25–22 to retake the match lead, 2–1.

Set 4 — Haskell Forces a Decider (26–24 Haskell)
Set four was the most dramatic of the night. Mission got out front with timely kills and a huge block from Sarah Purcell, taking a 15–9 lead midway through. But Haskell clawed its way back, cutting the deficit to 18–16. Mission answered again to lead 22–16, seemingly on the brink of victory. Instead, Haskell mounted a furious comeback, storming back to take its first late lead at 25–24. In a tense exchange, the Indians capitalized on Mission miscues to steal the set, 26–24, and force a decisive fifth.

Set 5 — Mission Dominates (15–1 Mission)
After letting set four slip away, the Lady Patriots came out determined in the final frame. Maxwell opened with her third ace of the match, sparking a blistering 6–0 run that forced an early Haskell timeout. The dominance only continued, as Mission pushed its advantage to 8–0 at the side switch and 12–1 on another Kirkpatrick block. The Lady Patriots closed the door without hesitation, winning 15–1 in the fifth to secure the match, 3–2.

Post Game
With the victory, Mission improves to 4–10 and picks up an important AMC win. Shelby Evans led the offensive charge with clutch kills throughout the night, Hannah Maxwell added multiple aces and assists to control the flow of the attack, and Violet Kirkpatrick and Sarah Purcell anchored the defense at the net with key blocks. The Lady Patriots now turn their attention to another road test, traveling to St. Louis on Saturday to face Columbia College.
