Mission University Women's Basketball opened play in the MACU Classic on Friday night, falling to Nelson University (Texas) 89–54 inside the Gaulke Activity Center.

Nelson's size and length inside proved to be a major factor early, as the Wildcats used their frontcourt presence to control the glass and score 28 points in the paint. Despite the physical mismatch, the Patriots continued to compete, steadily narrowing the scoring gap each quarter and finishing strong down the stretch.

Strong Fourth Quarter

After trailing by 22 at halftime, Mission showed improved offensive rhythm and ball movement. The Patriots' fourth quarter was their best of the night — shooting 53% from the field and matching Nelson basket for basket through the final 10 minutes.

Jones and Gunter Lead the Way

Ireland Jones led Mission with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, setting the tone with her effort on both ends. Autumn Gunter added 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Jayla Kirksey finished with six points and Miya Nieto contributed seven and two assists.

Team Notes

Mission shot 90.9% from the free-throw line and finished with 33 rebounds, including 20 points in the paint. Though Nelson's depth and size allowed them to grab a 48–33 edge on the boards, the Patriots' fight and improved execution late showed strong growth against a nationally competitive opponent.
