The Mission University Women's Basketball team showed remarkable fight on Saturday afternoon, storming back from a 22-point deficit to take the lead late before ultimately falling 75–71 to St. Thomas University in St. Louis.
After being outscored 27–8 in the opening quarter, the Patriots completely flipped the momentum, outscoring St. Thomas 63–48 over the final three periods. Mission's largest lead came midway through the third quarter when they surged ahead by seven with 2:45 remaining in the frame — a testament to their energy, execution, and composure under pressure.
Despite the strong push, St. Thomas regained control late and survived a last-second comeback attempt. Autumn Gunter had a tough look from the elbow with 10 seconds left that would have tied the game, but her shot just missed as the Patriots ran out of time.
Offensive Leaders
Autumn Gunter came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points, connecting on four three-pointers and attacking the basket throughout the second half. Ireland Jones added 15 points and six assists while going 9-for-12 from the free-throw line, helping fuel Mission's comeback run.
Miya Nieto finished with 13 points, including three makes from deep, while Lauren Carson and Ashtyn Callaway added 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance.
Team Performance
Mission shot an efficient 45.1% from the field and 37% from beyond the arc while hitting 15-of-21 free throws (71.4%). The Patriots battled evenly on the boards, collecting 34 rebounds to St. Thomas's 37, and distributed the ball well with 13 assists on 23 made field goals.
Defensively, Mission forced several key turnovers and held the Bobcats to just 35.9% shooting overall and 26.9% from three-point range. The difference came in points off turnovers — St. Thomas converted 18 Patriot giveaways into points, while Mission managed only seven in return.
