Lady Patriots have good trip to Ecclesia College

Springfield, Missouri-  The Lady Patriots swept the Lady Royals of Ecclesia College in a twin bill doubleheader, 7-3 and 19-13.  The two games were quite a contrast; the first being good hitting and average defense by both squads, the second being a wide-open offensive display and below average defense.  In the opener, neither team scored until the fourth inning.  In the fourth, a rally began for the Lady Patriots with two outs.  Ellie Mitchell drew a walk, then Courtney Merrell doubled to center field to bring home Mitchell.  The Lady Royals countered with a run in their half of the inning, on two walks and a pair of hit batsman, to make it 1-1.  After one out was recorded against the Lady Patriots in the top of the fifth inning, Apryl Zeno reached on an error by the Ecclesia third baseman.  Zeno, running with the pitch, scored all the way from first base on Maddie Good's single to make it 2-1, MU.  In the bottom of the fifth, EC tied it again, this time using three hits, 2-2.  Finally in the sixth inning, the Lady Pats broke through with a big inning, scoring five to take a 7-2 advantage.  Kate Potter drew a base on balls first.  After one out occurred, Merrell singled to left, advancing Potter to second base.  Kloe Hendrickson mashed an RBI double that scored both runners.  Hendrickson moved on to third base on an error by the catcher.  Cole Smith laced a single to left to score Hendrickson.  The big blow happened next.  Zeno hit a drive to center field for a two-run homer for the five run inning and lead.  The Lady Royals did put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring a tally on three hits, but it fell short as the Lady Patriots claimed game one, 7-3.
             
Highlights- The second game of the doubleheader might best be described using one word; wild.  Mission took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first, but eventually lost the lead, and had to fight back to regain the advantage to finally secure the win.  In the first, Courtney Merrell singled to left to lead off.  Kloe Hendrickson hit a deep grounder to shortstop to single and move Merrell to second.  Cole Smith hit a ball back to the pitcher who threw the ball away trying to get an out.  Merrell came in to score and Hendrickson moved to third base.  Hendrickson then scored while the defense was not paying attention.  Apryl Zeno followed with a double to right field that drove in Smith.  After an out was recorded by the Lady Royals, Jocelyn Cunningham reached on an error by the first baseman that Zeno was able to score on.  Ecclesia countered with two runs in the bottom of the first.  The Lady Patriots scored a tally in the second inning to make it 5-2, MU.  Merrell led off with a double to right field.  Merrell moved to third base on an infield single by Hendrickson to second base.  Smith again hit back to the pitcher who retired her, but not before Hendrickson was able to move to second base.  In the meantime, Merrell was thrown out at third base.  Zeno then reached first base on an error by the second baseman that allowed Hendrickson to score.  In the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Royals were able to score four runs on three hits with a Lady Patriot error added to the mix, to give Ecclesia a 6-5 lead.  The Lady Royals had a big third inning, scoring six more runs on four hits and another MU error, 12-5 EC.  The Lady Patriots finally started to turn the momentum in their direction again in the top of the fourth inning.  Merrell led off with a single to center field, then went to second on a passed ball.  Hendrickson then hit a grounder to the first baseman who made an error for a first and third situation, with no out, for MU.  Hendrickson followed by stealing second base and on the play the EC shortstop made an error allowing Merrell to score.  Smith followed with a walk.  Zeno loaded the bases with a base on balls of her own.  After an out was recorded by the Lady Royals, Cunningham hit a nice single to center that scored Hendrickson and Smith.  The Lady Patriots had pulled to within 12-8.  After holding Ecclesia scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Pats got the offense going again in the fifth inning.  After one was out, Merrell ripped a home run to left field.  Hendrickson followed with a single to center.  Smith reached on an error by the shortstop to make it first and second with one out for Mission.  Zeno capitalized on a pitch to double to left field that scored Hendrickson, moving Smith to third base.  Maddie Good followed with a double to center that scored both Smith and Zeno.  With Good in scoring position, Cunningham hit the perfect single to center field that plated Good, 13-12, MU.  The Lady Royals were not done just yet.  They managed to score a run on a single hit to tie the game, 13-13, after five innings.  Mission put the game away in the sixth and seventh inning scoring three runs in each, while holding the Lady Royals scoreless.  In the sixth, Hendrickson started things off with a single to center.  Smith singled to center as well, pushing Hendrickson to third base, then on in to score on an error.  Zeno then grounded into a force play to retire Smith at second base.  Good singled to right field and the aggressive Zeno moved over to third base.  Ellie Mitchell came in to run for Good.  Cunningham grounded out third to first, which scored Zeno and moved Mitchell into scoring position.  Karissa Roberts then sent a double to left field that scored Mitchell.  In the seventh, the Lady Patriots' Merrell singled to left.  Hendrickson made it to first base on an error by the centerfielder, but Merrell was caught at third base trying to advance.  Smith then hit a double to left field that drove in Hendrickson.  Zeno also hit a double to left field, but Smith only advanced to third.  Good followed with a single to right that plated Smith.  After a second MU out, Roberts singled deep into the shortstop hole which allowed Zeno to score.

The Lady Patriots stay on the road as they travel to Columbia, Missouri, for a doubleheader, Friday 11, against the Stephens College Stars.  Game times are 2 and 4 pm.
