SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – The Lady Patriots hit their first three shots from beyond the arc and were off and running with a 9-4 lead two and a half minutes into the contest. The Central Baptist College Lady Mustangs never let up, scratching out a hustling effort as the game never got completely out of hand. In the first quarter, after going up 16-4 and then 20-6, CBC managed to cut the deficit to six points, 24-18, at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Josie Sullivan had the hot hand in the opening period as she knocked down a pair of treys and scored 8 points in ten minutes. Sullivan then hit a jumper to start the scoring in the second quarter as part of a 5-0 run that extended Mission's lead to 29-18 with a minute and a half gone. When the Lady Patriots made it 33-19 with just under 7 minutes remaining in the first half, Central Baptist was forced to call a second timeout. The Lady Pats followed that up with a 10-2 run to make it 43-21 with 4 minutes left in the half. The Lady Mustangs continued to fight valiantly, but found themselves down by twenty, 49-29, at intermission.
In the third quarter, both teams went toe-to-toe resulting in a 16-16 tie. The Lady Patriots did have as big as a 27 point lead, 63-36 after a
Laney Humble trey with 2:25 to go in the period, but the Lady Mustangs rallied to get back to that halftime 20 point deficit, 65-45, when the quarter ended. With the nice lead, Coach Wallace was afforded the luxury of resting her starters in the fourth quarter for the Saturday game, and was rewarded by a nice showing by her bench. Central Baptist did manage to cut the deficit down to 16 points, 68-52, with 6:28 remaining, but then the Lady Patriot bench came alive, pushing the advantage to as much as 25 points, 85-60, on a conventional three-point play by
Naomi Daugherty with :05 to go. The Lady Mustangs answered with a layup at the buzzer to drop the game, 85-62. For the game, the Lady Patriots made 14, three-point baskets to CBC's 5, and outrebounded the Lady Mustangs by 10, 42-32.
