SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – The Lady Patriots were consistent in their scoring throughout the game, winning three of the four quarters to claim an AMC victory over Harris-Stowe State University. The Lady Patriots never trailed as they built a double digit lead by the end of the first quarter, 24-12, then, fore the most part, maintained that advantage. The first quarter was an explosion on offense by
Ireland Jones as she accounted for seven of the team's first eleven points to lead, 11-4. Then
Heaven Shockley went to work, scoring eight first period points for the Lady Patriots. The play of
Josie Sullivan and
Cassidy Hambelton throughout the match was inspiring as each were constantly, physically hounded by the Lady Hornets. Sullivan scored six of the team's first eight points of the second quarter as the lead hovered around ten points most of the ten minutes. The Lady Hornets did manage to pull within five points, 37-32, with 2:24 remaining in the half, before Hambelton canned a three-pointer, then Sullivan made a driving layup, followed by Jones' three-pointer. When the quarter ended the Lady Patriots had managed to extend the lead back to ten, 45-35, at the break.
In the third quarter, MU stretched the lead to 16 by the first four minutes, 53-37, as Shockley went on a 6-0 personal run during that time. The lead blossomed to 22 on a pair of free throws by Hambelton with 4:27 remaining in the third period before the Lady Hornets rallied to cut the deficit down to 12 points, 66-54, with ten minutes to play.
Laney Humble had a big fourth quarter to help maintain the lead as she tossed in all eight of her points. The team hit 44 percent of their three-point attempts, 8 of 18, and were their usual solid free throw shooters, by converting 19 of 23 for 83 percent. Sullivan finished the match with a game-high 25 points and a double-double, as she yanked down 14 boards as well. The Lady Patriots are currently in third place in the AMC and hope to keep it when they play their final regular season game on Saturday against William Woods University.
