ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Mission University men's basketball put together one of its most complete efforts of the season on Wednesday night, going toe-to-toe with undefeated Missouri Baptist before ultimately falling 87–80 on the road.
The Patriots (3–6) matched the Spartans in nearly every category, shooting 41.3% from the field and winning the rebounding battle 50–45, but Missouri Baptist's overwhelming advantage at the free-throw line proved to be the difference. The Spartans went 34-for-46 at the stripe compared to Mission's 12-for-18, generating a 22-point swing that ultimately decided the game.
Strong Individual Performances
Najee Williams led the Patriots with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, continuing his stretch of efficient scoring.
Taco Biggs added 15 points, and Justin Gill delivered a strong all-around night with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
A major bright spot came from Jamarian Cato, who made the most of his first opportunity to play, scoring 17 points and providing an immediate spark off the bench.
Competitive First Half Sets the Tone
Mission came out with energy, matching Missouri Baptist's physicality and shot-making. The Patriots led by as many as seven and trailed only 42–40 at the halftime break after shooting 40% and keeping the Spartans out of rhythm.
Second Half Fight Comes Up Just Short
Missouri Baptist gained momentum late in the second half, using dribble penetration and offensive boards to get to the line repeatedly. The Spartans' aggressive style produced 46 free-throw attempts, allowing them to hold off every Mission push despite the Patriots outplaying them in several areas.
Mission continued to compete until the final minute, trimming the deficit to single digits before Missouri Baptist closed the game at the line.
