Patriots Control Tempo in 82–71 Victory at Haskell

Mission University Men's Basketball put together one of its most complete performances of the season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Haskell 82–71 on the road to secure a season sweep of the Indians. The Patriots improved to 4–8 overall, bouncing back from their home loss to Central Methodist, while Haskell fell to 3–11.

Pregame

This was the second meeting of the season between the programs, with Mission winning the first matchup at home 114–94. Entering Tuesday, Mission was looking to regain momentum after a narrow seven-point loss, while Haskell was attempting to halt a skid following a 115–85 defeat to Oklahoma City.

Game Summary

Mission started the afternoon slow, falling behind 19–6 as Haskell's early pace and second-chance points dictated the opening minutes. But everything shifted once the Patriots went to their bench.

A spark from Davion Sargent-Young, Jordyn Turner, and Marcell Perry flipped the tempo, and Mission ripped off a 16–7 run to pull within 26–22. Clifford Barrow then began heating up from deep, knocking down three first-half triples as Mission fully erased the deficit.

The turning point came at the 3:00 mark, when Sargent-Young drilled a transition three to give Mission its first lead of the afternoon at 38–35. From there, the Patriots closed the half on an emphatic 14–5 burst. A steal and layup from Sterling Vinson, followed by a Barrow buzzer-beating three with one second left, sent Mission into halftime ahead 49–40.

The Patriots opened the second half by applying pressure on both ends. Najee Williams scored Mission's first five points, then assisted on a Sammy Ishimwe layup that pushed the margin to double digits. Another three by Williams stretched the lead to 56–40, capping a dominant 33–11 run that began late in the first half.

Mission led by as many as 18 after back-to-back triples from Williams, who finished with 19 points on efficient shooting. Haskell responded with several late threes from Nehemiah Boykins and Cordell Funmaker, but the Patriots had answers each time — most notably inside, where Ishimwe scored two late layups to extend the advantage to 79–70.

Down the stretch, turnovers and missed free throws hindered Haskell's comeback effort, while Sargent-Young sealed the win with four clutch free throws in the final two minutes. Mission controlled the rebounding battle 39–39 with key offensive boards that translated to second-chance points in crucial stretches.

Stat Leaders

Mission shot 46% from the field and 40.7% from three while holding Haskell under 40% shooting. The Patriots also forced 13 turnovers, converting many of them into transition points.

Postgame

This win marked Mission's most disciplined defensive showing of the season, highlighted by extended stops and timely rebounding in the second half. The Patriots' depth was also a major storyline, with the bench contributing 27 points and supplying the momentum that turned the game around.

Next Up

Mission now turns its attention to its first conference game of the season, heading to St. Louis on Monday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 PM to take on UHSP
