STERLING, Kan. — Mission University found the net three times, including two late goals from Myla Skenderovic, but an early Sterling College scoring surge sent the Lady Patriots to an 8-3 road loss on Sept. 1.
Sterling scored five times during the opening 32 minutes and carried a 6-1 advantage into halftime. Mission responded with a stronger second half, matching the Warriors with two goals and five shots over the final 45 minutes.
Sterling Builds Early Advantage
Sterling opened the scoring in the third minute and added two more goals before nine minutes had elapsed. The Warriors extended their lead to 5-0 in the 32nd minute.
Mission began generating pressure moments later. Destiny Mendoza struck the crossbar in the 32nd minute before Kadyn Garland had an attempt stopped by a Sterling defender.
Garland broke through in the 35th minute, scoring an unassisted goal to put the Lady Patriots on the board. Sterling answered in the 44th minute and entered halftime with a 6-1 lead.
Goalkeeper Emma Vance recorded five saves during the opening half.
Lady Patriots Match Sterling in Second Half
The teams traded two goals apiece after halftime.
Sterling added goals in the 52nd and 67th minutes before Mission closed the match with two of the final three scoring chances.
Khloe Pehl placed a shot on goal in the 76th minute, and Skenderovic scored her first goal less than three minutes later. Skenderovic continued to apply pressure, having another attempt cleared by a Sterling defender in the 83rd minute before scoring again in the 89th.

Mission finished with eight shots and placed six on goal. The Lady Patriots recorded five of their shots during the second half and earned four corner kicks.
Skenderovic led Mission with four shots, three shots on goal and two goals. Garland scored on both of her attempts on goal, while Pehl added a shot on frame.
